A classic British bread and butter pudding — buttered bread layered with mixed dried fruit, soft brown sugar and a hint of grated nutmeg, baked in a milk-and-egg custard until the top is golden and the inside is soft. Best served warm with custard.

Ingredients 225g bread of choice with crusts removed 275ml milk 50g melted butter 75g soft brown sugar 2 teaspoon mixed spice 1 egg 175g mixed fruit Grated rind of 1/2 an orange Freshly grated nutmeg
Method
- Preheat the oven to 180 Degrees Celcius
- Butter a 1.25L baking dish
- break the bread into small pieces, pour over the milk, stir and leave for 30minutes.
- Add the melted butter, sugar, mixed spice and beaten egg. Stir the mixture well to get rid of any lumps.
- Add the mixed fruit and orange rind.
- Transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish and sprinkle over the freshly grated nutmeg.
- Bake in the oven for around 1hour 15minutes or until cooked (if you put a knife in it should come out with no mixture on it).
This dish is either eaten hot or cold and goes beautifully with custard!
